Obituary for Charles Thomas "Tom" Price

Charles Thomas "Tom" Price Jr., age 83, and the husband of Connie Swindler Price, passed away Friday, April 6, 2018 in Lexington at U.K. Medical Center. Tom was the son of the late C.T. Price, Sr. and Onah Tribble Price and was born November 17, 1934 in Georgetown, Kentucky.

Tom was a member of the First Methodist Church in Georgetown, a retired Lt. Commander of the Navy Sea Bees Reserve, he graduated from Garth High School, and obtained his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Kentucky.

He began his career in 1958 as an Assistant Resident Engineer, for the Kentucky Dept of Highways, was Project Engineer in 1964 for the Kentucky Dept of Finance and in 1966 he opened C. Tom Price & Associates, Civil Engineer and Land Surveyor, in Georgetown. Tom oversaw and inspected many streets and road projects in Georgetown. He also assisted with many projects in Kentucky including highway layouts, construction layouts for the piers at the Camp Nelson bridge, and the Interstate bridge at Latonia. He is responsible for the designs and layouts of many subdivisions around our town including Ironworks Estates, Armstrong, Indian Hills and Stonehedge Estates, just to name a few. Tom assisted with the temporary roads, parking lots and buildings during the construction of the Toyota Plant including placement of the precision control points for the large machines inside the buildings. Early on, his drawings and plats were completely hand drawn and lettered. He loved seeing the project site first before it was disturbed by construction equipment, even if that involved the use of a machete. Regularly seen working outdoors and walking with a tripod and transit on his shoulder. As an ardent follower of bluegrass music and harmonica player, Tom was a beloved member of the “Bullshippers” bluegrass band. He was a member of the Rotary Club and Jaycees Club. Tom was always actively involved with every project, both in his job and in his community. He donated many hours to Habitat for Humanity in Georgetown and Eastern Kentucky, he helped neighbors and friends in times of need, and he also took three mission trips with the Methodist church to help build a church. Well known in our community, Tom was recognized wherever he went.

In addition to his wife, Connie, he is survived by his children, Kent Price of Bradenton, Florida, Stirling Sampson (Kelly) of Nicholasville, Kentucky, Amy Price of Bradenton, Florida and Craig Price (Amanda) of Georgetown, Kentucky; 6 grandchildren, Stirling "Buddy" Sampson, Matthew "Bryan" Sampson, Jacob Price, Charles “Chad” Edwards III, Sydney Sampson, Alex Price and 6 great grandchildren, Ainsley Sampson, Stirling “Tripp” Sampson III, Oliver Sampson, Seth Sampson, Jude Sampson and Lilian Price. Lauderdale, Florida, sister and brother in laws Janice and William “Bill” Seymour of Louisville, Kentucky with whom he had a special bond, and many dear nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother William Curtis Price.
