Obituary for Marie Jones

Marie Jones, 87 of Georgetown, passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2018. She was born March 1, 1930 in Morgan County, Kentucky and was the daughter of the late Herman Walton and Dosha Lewis Stallins. She is survived by a daughter, Kathy Gross (Allen) of Georgetown, and a son, Lynn Jones (Kathy) of Lexington, two grandchildren, Sam Gross and Candy Jones, and a sister-in-law, Nora Walton. She was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Jones, and two brothers, Herman Walton, Jr. and Clay Walton.

Marie began her 60-year education career in Morgan County where she taught in a one-room school with a provisional certificate. Once she completed her degree, she accepted a position teaching business at Stamping Ground High School. When the county schools were consolidated in 1955, she became the Business Department Chair at Scott County High School and remained there until her retirement in 1990. The District and School administration quickly realized Marie was too valuable an asset to lose to retirement, and Marie agreed to return in a part-time role, working with state vocational mandates, foreign exchange students, the senior class, and most of the “extras” that made SCHS unique and special. She organized and supervised every class election, homecoming and graduation until her final retirement in 2013.

Marie was known for her deep love for the Scott County Cardinals. Even in the last few years, with an oxygen tank in tow, she made it to every game possible. Her home reflected that love of Scott County with cardinals decorating every room. Her honors were many, but two were especially dear to her. In 2012, she was inducted into the Scott County High School Athletic Hall of Fame because of her unwavering support and volunteer hours devoted to the Athletic Department. In 2016, she was named to the Louie B. Nunn Kentucky Teacher Hall of Fame in recognition of her dedication to the profession and the excellence she consistently demonstrated.

Visitation will be 5-8 pm on Thursday, January 18th, 2018 at Tucker, Yocum, & Wilson Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 11:30 am on Friday, January 19th, 2018 at the funeral home
