Martha attended Carroll County High School and began working when she was 16 years old in Carrollton, Kentucky. She worked at the Choo Choo Inn and The Gypsy Grill in Carrollton, until marrying the love of her life, the late Harrison Abbott from Bedford, Kentucky. She had a passion for classical music, including Pavaratti, ice skating, and loved playing Bingo, especially when she won. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio and attended the Sanders Baptist Church in Sanders, Kentucky.

In addition to her late husbands, she was preceded in death by her oldest son, Randall Abbott Raisor and brothers: Hollie Smith Jr., Lloyd Smith, Freddie Smith, and Walter Smith.
