Obituary for Reverend Doctor Orville Heath Griffin

Reverend Doctor Orville Heath Griffin, age 85, husband of 65 years to the late Lois Laverne Watson Griffin, passed away September 18, 2017. He was born November 18, 1931, in Scott County, Kentucky, to the late Tom and Maudie Griffin. Orville was a 1950 graduate of Stamping Ground High School, graduating with honors, receiving the Citizenship Award and Voted Most Outstanding Senior Boy of his Class. He was active in Music and a member of the Speech Team. Orville was a point guard on his High School Basketball Team, winning the 41st District Championship and selected as a member of the All Tournament Team.
Orville attended Georgetown College, while pastoring a church in Kelat, Kentucky. He was called 1 year later, to be Pastor of the Cedar Grove Baptist Church, near Stamping Ground, Kentucky. In 1954, at the age of 22, Orville accepted the call to be the Pastor of East Dayton Baptist Church. The young congregation grew into one of the largest growing Southern Baptist Churches in the Ohio Convention. In 1967, Orville and Lois moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where Orville accepted the position of Director of Missions for the Cincinnati Baptist Association. In 1970, Orville became the Director of Missions for the Greater Dayton Association of Baptists. In 1976, Orville and Lois relocated to Columbus, Ohio, with Orville joining the staff of the Ohio State Convention, as Director of Evangelism and Stewardship. In 1982, he was elected as the Associate Executive Director of the Ohio Convention and in 1992, was elected by the State Convention to be the Executive Director Treasurer. Orville served as a trustee for the University of the Cumberland’s, in Williamsburg, Kentucky and most recently served as an Honorary Trustee. In 1982, The University of the Cumberland’s conferred on Orville the Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree. In 1996, Orville and Lois retired after 42 years of service in Ohio and Orville receiving from Georgetown College, the Darty F. Stowe Award, for his years of service of Christian Ministry. Orville was a member of the White Sulphur Baptist Church. Orville was compassionate, supportive, trust worthy, kind hearted, devoted and a mentor to many.
Orville is survived by his sons Ronald Wayne (Charlotte) Griffin, and Douglas Dean (Dawn) Griffin, daughter Lori Sue Griffin Haynes, and a niece he helped to raise, Kelley Lee Watson Zatorski, grandchildren, Nathan Griffin, Amy Griffin Smith, Amber Griffin Arnett, Kyle Griffin, Justin Haynes, Todd Koogler, and Whitney McConnell, great grandchildren, Hannah Griffin, Emma Smith, Gage Griffin, Todd Koogler, Jr., Samantha Koogler, Randall Kyle Arnett, and Daniel Arnett, brothers Tommy (Carolyn) Griffin, Johnny (Jane) Griffin, sister Barbara (James) Cook. He was preceded in death by brothers Joel Griffin, Warren (Edith) Griffin, Wendell (Ruby) Griffin, Billy (Nola Mae) Griffin, Robert Griffin, Kenneth (Jimmie Sue) Griffin, Jackie (Carol) Griffin, sister Reba (Danny) Provost.
Visitation will be Sunday, September 24th 2017, at Tucker, Yocum & Wilson Funeral Home, 320 West Main Street, Georgetown, KY, 2:00-5:00PM. Service will be Monday, September 25th, 2017, at White Sulphur Baptist Church, 5300 Ironworks, Georgetown, KY , 10:00 AM with Reverend Jack Kwok officiating and Reverend John Cravens assisting. Burial will follow at Masonic Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Nathan Griffin, Justin Haynes, Kyle Griffin, Kenny Griffin, Bobby Griffin, Phil Cook, Fred Griffin, and David Griffin. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to: State Convention of Baptists in Ohio, 9000 Antares Ave., Columbus, OH 43240.
