Obituary for Leland James Loomis

Leland James Loomis, 99, widower of Marijean Underwood Loomis, of Georgetown, passed away March 24, 2018 at Country Place in Lexington, Kentucky.

He was born in Jackson County, Michigan on his father’s dairy farm located in Liberty Township on December 21, 1918. He said it must have been a glorious occasion because that date made the shortest day of the year! His parents were George and Nina Loomis.. He had four brothers, who all proceeded him in death: Cecil Halbert Loomis, George Carroll Loomis, Calvin Lyle Loomis, Byron Claude Loomis

There was a bit of moving around in Michigan and he later lived on a farm which is now The Cascade. He became proficient dealing with bovines, threshing machines and manure spreaders. Of course he had usual schooling, graduating high school at Vandercook Lake. He worked his way through Engineering College at Tri-State in Angola, Indiana, doing such things as operating punch presses and working in chemical labs. June 1943, during WW II, he attained his B.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering.

While in college he was on a cooperative plan of 6 months of schooling and 6 months of working. He made a bad mistake of purchasing a motorcycle for cheap transportation. It cost him! He became involved in an accident that awarded him 19 fractures and his aunt sent his obituary to the paper, but he didn’t die.

Other events in Lee’s career were a session with Ford Motor at River Rouge Plant in Dearborn, Michigan; experience in process and quality control a steel foundry, senior lubrication engineer, with Amoco Oil Co. and an efficiency engineer for an equipment company. He later purchased a Taylorcraft Airplane. As if the motorcycle wasn’t enough.

He married Marijean (Jean) Underwood in Jackson, Michigan, on September 16, 1950. Their honeymoon was in Lee’s Luscombe aircraft, flying to New Mexico, Texas, and Old Mexico.

They lived in Dearborn, Michigan; Plymouth, Michigan; Toledo, Ohio; Louisville, Kentucky; and Evansville, Indiana before retiring to Venice, Florida where they lived for 37 years. Then they moved to Georgetown, KY.

He enjoyed traveling, designing furniture, genealogy, photography and several other hobbies. He was a member of Charlotte County Genealogical Society in Port Charlotte, Florida and The Descendants of the Founders of Ancient Windsor

He did an article in 1996, his parting remark for this interview was “I haven’t decided on a death date yet—but maybe 2018!

Lee is survived by his daughter, Nancy (Russ) Thomason of Georgetown, three grandchildren, Cole Thomason of Louisville, Elizabeth Thomason and Connor Thomason both of Georgetown and a great grandchild, Annabelle Sandoval.
